Elmo Cake Disaster!

My best friend, Rhiannon, was awesome enough to ask me to make the cake for her son‘s, James, 2nd birthday party. Little James is obsessed with Elmo so she wanted an Elmo cake. Which worked out perfectly because I have an Elmo cake pan. She decided on an Elmo with a guitar, a black jacket, and jeans and a dozen kupcakes with music notes on them. Seemed easy enough. The night before I baked the chocolate kupcakes and the white cake. With the intent to decorate everything before we went to the birthday party. I work up early Saturday morning and was already running into bumps. I ran out of foil to cover the boards. Jesse, being the wonderful boyfriend he is, ran to go grab me some. Once he got back he put the boards together, while I colored the icing and got ready to remove the cake from its pan. Once I started to cake the cake out of the pan, things went from ok to disaster in 2 seconds. The cake didn’t come out of the pan all the way which normally isn’t a big deal. I just put it back together with a little icing and make it look pretty. The cake not only didn’t come out of the pan, but it was crumbling every time I touched it. At this point I had 3 hours before the birthday party and no cake. I broke down and cried. Thank goodness Jesse was there or else it would have only gotten worse. He was able to bring me back and run to Price Cutter and buy a plan sheet cake from them. Once he got back, I had to cut the cake out and start over from scratch. I have never free handed a design on a cake before. I knew that day would come but I thought I would have enough time to plan it out. Jesse turned into my assistant and made more icing as I started on the cake. Elmo isn’t as perfect as I know I could have done but it made me happy once I got to the party and James looked at the cake and said Elmo. I learned a big lesson this time and that was have a plan B ready for my cakes and also that Jesse can’t decorate kupcakes worth a darn.

Here are some pictures of the cake taken by Rene:

Not closed for good

Unfortunately Kimmie’s Kupcakes as kind of been put on hold for the time while I’m trying to make it through this semester. In-between a full time job and being a full time student, I just don’t have enough time for baking like I use too. Which makes me really sad because I love being in the kitchen baking. But hopefully after this semester I will be able to get back into baking some awesome kupcakes!

March Maddness!

Busy month in the world of Kimmie's Kupcakes.

Kaylon's birthday was March 8 and Ali's birthday was March 12th. For Kaylon's Birthday I made Chocolate Malt Kupcakes and for Ali's birthday, I made Funfetti Kupcakes. I would rather not make kupcakes out of a box but she really wanted these. Also I might be getting my first big kupcake client! A bar we go to a lot is being bought out and the opening week for the Springfield Cardinals they are doing a huge week long event and Kaylon was talking to him and he was interested in having me bake some kupcakes for him! So exciting! We gave him a card and he said he would contact me in a week or 2. Different news I will be taking cake decorating classes a week from monday. I haven't learned how to use fondant and make flowers and the basic stuff. Very exciting! Also this will give me a chance to expand later to cakes. :)

Big Game Kupcakes

For the Super Bowl I made stout kupcakes using Guinness. I was a little worried about these at first. Guinness is a beer not a lot of people like. But everyone really seemed to like these. Also part of the reason was because they thought it was kool there was beer in them. :)

I decorated them with the stout glaze and made footballs, saint and colts logos out of milk and white chocolate.

I made 21 standard size and 24 mini kupcakes. and I only was left with a few standard size and no minis.

Brown Sugar Kupcakes

These are some yummy brown sugar pound kupcakes! My friends really like mini kupcakes, easier to eat. I made these just for a winter bbq.
I found this little sweater at wal-mart and I couldn’t pass it up! Sookie looks soooo adorable in it! And I think she likes it!

Pumpkin and Princess Kupcakes

For my Mom's birthday (October 1st), she sent me a recipe for pumpkin kupcakes and bought me some pumpkin molds to use. I used the base of the recipe she gave me and added a little more stuff to make it my own. I don’t like pumpkin and have never cooked with it before and still don’t enjoy cooking with it. It smells awful. lol I used a carmel rum glaze and I have to say it s my favorite glaze I have used to this day. Very simple to make and very good and any thing that has rum in it is good. ;) Oh and i used Carmel to makethe pumpkins have stems, leaves and little vines. :)

For the same family birthday party I made Princess Kupcakes. Shyann is turning 5 and love princesses. I bought cute Princess cupcake cups and made vanilla kupcakes with purple sprinkles baked inside. Then Iced with pink homemade buttercream. She loved them.
